Biography

Dr. William Gilly is a Professor of Marine and Organismal Biology at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Lab. Born is Allentown Pennsylvania, Gilly's boyhood "random explorations for rocks, fossils and insects" on the way home from school foreshadowed a biological scientific career that began at Princeton, where he majored in electrical engineering.

A physics course in air pollution sparked curiosity about odor detection; why, he wondered, couldn't a machine be devised that worked like the human nose? From this question his interest in nervous systems resulted in a Ph.D. (1978) from Washington University in Physiology and Biophysics as well as studies at the Yale Medical School.

While doing post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania, Gilly spent summers at the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole. It was here that he discovered squid and began working on membrane biophysics of the squid giant axon, the largest nerve cell of any organism. In 1980 Gilly joined the faculty at Hopkins where today his work includes field studies of the Humboldt squid.
