Yellowfin Tuna Tagging with Kurt Schaefer

Kurt Schaefer and Dan Fuller, scientists with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission La Jolla, California, completed the 7th annual Tagging of Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) yellowfin tuna tagging cruise aboard the San Diego based long-range sportfishing vessel Royal Star (images provided) during the period of December 10-20, 2008.

Jane Stevens at Hopkins Marine Station, Pacific Grove, CA - Faster than a speeding squid, the Monterey Bay Aquarium's young white shark blasted south when he was released on Feb. 5. In just 44 days, he "made it safely past fishing grounds on the Pacific coast of California and the Baja Peninsula, rounded Cabo San Lucas and is heading toward the Mexican mainland," according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Loggerheads in Trouble

Jane Stevens in Santa Cruz, CA. -- Some bad news came this weekend: the numbers of loggerhead turtles are dropping. They were increasing during the 1990s, but the five-year review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service showed a turn-around.
