Photographing White Sharks off Pt. Reyes

I recently had the good fortune to spend two days 'on the water' with the Pt. Reyes white shark tagging project.

Researcher Paul Kanive, always attentive to the ever changing ocean conditions so close to shore, kept his trained eyes on the seal decoy floating off the stern of our small craft. His call, "Shark up!" instantly put us to our tasks, mine being that of photo-documenting the close encounter-of-the-great-white-shark kind!

I finished the two day adventure with an appreciation for the impressive scope of the project and the unique skills needed to be an open-water shark scientist. I had the satisfaction of having contributed a "fin shot" that added to the data base of the white shark population study.
