Five Makos Now on Satellite Tracking
Posted July 8th, 2007 by SuzanneKohin
Today we caught another very large mako. This one was a mature male. We were able to put both a SPOT and PAT tag on him. By now we have placed a SPOT/PAT pair on 4 large makos, and placed just a SPOT tag on one smaller mako. We also caught a fairly large female blue shark today. She had a few bite marks evident on her body, which we believe were from a male blue sharke trying mate with her. Many of the larger blue sharks we catch have bite marks on their bodies, presumably from mating activity.
Tonight we tried fishing for squid again. This photo that I took shows some of the 14 scientists and 14 crew trying their luck. This time we didn't have any, despite our combined efforts. I've also included a picture Carl Safina (the guest researcher and author who's also blogging the trip) took of one of the squids we did catch two nights ago. They are really impressive animals!

Sleep?
Sharks all day and squids all night. When do you get to sleep?
